Wide-brimmed hats, bare backs, palazzo pants, and knitted caps. An inspiration for the Max Mara Spring Summer 2023 collection, shown at the Milan Stock Exchange, is the Riviera style of Renée Perle, the silent and elegant muse of photographer Jacques Henri Lartigue. Voluminous canvas trousers and long and languid skirts that hug the hips.
Another inspiration for the collection comes from Irish architect and furniture designer Eileen Gray, considered a pioneer of International Style aesthetics, who built E-1027, a modernist villa in Roquebrune-Cap-Martin, France. Max Mara reworks Gray’s aesthetic codes in a series of total looks made out of raw linen, an undyed yarn that looks like jute, some with fringed edges. Classic coats show structured silhouettes that take on the delicate allure of sun-faded beach robes.
